About the Speakers 

Christina Hippisley, General Manager
Portuguese Chamber of Commerce

Christina has been the General Manager of the Chamber since 2009.  She started her career in advertising and media relations, working first in London before moving to Lisbon, where she spent 10 years living and working in adverting and media related businesses. Having built a successful book and contract magazine publishing business in Portugal, with offices in Lisbon and the Algarve, in 1996 she sold the business and returned to London. She then continued her career in magazine and book publishing, working in senior roles at Archant Specialist Media, Virgin Books, and Bath-based publishers Merricks Media. She became a director of the Chamber in 2006.  Christina will open each seminar with our panel of real estate agents and resort owners, talking  about life in Portugal and how and where to buy property there.

Alan Murray, Tax Partner
Mazars Ireland

Alan Murray is a tax partner in Mazars, who has over 15 years’ experience dealing with high-level Private Client tax issues. His areas of expertise are residence planning issues, dealing with non-Irish domiciled clients, and Irish tax resident beneficiaries of non-Irish based trusts. Alan has significant experience in dealing with capital gains tax planning, and with  high-level inheritance and gift tax planning.  He has written on various Private Client topics for industry-specific publications and the national media, and has given lectures to business organisations on tax matters as they pertain to Private Clients.  Alan will be talking about how Irish residents can structure their tax and residence issues prior to moving to Portugal.

Geoffrey Graham, Partner

Geoffrey is a dual British and Irish national. After studying law at Birmingham and York and starting his legal career in Belfast and the City, he moved to Portugal. He has been living and working in Lisbon for 18 years and is registered as an English solicitor with the Portuguese Law Society. He specialises in advising UK and Irish residents on their Portuguese investments, including their tax and real estate matters. In order to deal with the high demand for advice on the very favourable tax regime in Portugal (the Non Habitual Tax Residence or NHR Programme) he has formed an experienced bilingual team who provide the full range of advice for NHR applicants from Ireland, from the preliminary advice to advice on the filing of the first NHR tax return, and all of the tax, property and ancillary advice required in between.  Geoffrey will be talking about how Irish residents should plan their NHR tax status in regard to Portuguese law.

Bethell Codrington, Global Lead Pensions

Bethell started in Financial Services as an IFA in 1984.  In 1988 he moved into Investment Management.  In 1991 he joined Lonrho plc (then a FTSE 100 Company) as Head of Pensions. He was also a Trustee of the Common Investment Fund and sat on the Advisory Board for all the subsidiary companies’ pension schemes, including the likes of Kuhne & Nagel, the Volkswagen Audi Group etc and all the in-house schemes pan-Africa.

In 1999 Bethell set up the Employee Benefits Division for Alexander Forbes in London, and in 2001 he joined Swiss Life Asset Management, marketing investment management to Corporates and Local Authorities.

In 2004 Bethell was recruited by what is now the TMF Group  to set up their Global Pension Trustee and Administration business, both personal and corporate.  

Bethell will be talking about how to structure your pension across Irish and Portuguese tax barriers.
